The Greatest Scorer In First Division English Football History, Jimmy Greaves, Here As A Member Of Tottenham

Three top tier English footballers (from the Football League First Division between 1888-89 and 1991-92 through the English Premier League from 1992-93 to today) have collected over 300 career goals, led by Chelsea/Tottenham forward Jimmy Greaves with 357.

The other two are Everton forward Dixie Dean and Derby forward Steve Bloomer.

This is going back in time, though. Greaves, the most modern player of the three, made his mark in the 1960’s; Bloomer at the turn of the century; and Dean in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

It’s not until you get to Alan Shearer, with 283 goals of his own, that we enter the truly modern era on today’s list. Shearer started with Southampton in the late 1980’s, then split time into the mid-2000’s between Blackburn and Newcastle.

Only he, Ian Rush and Tony Cottee played in the 1980’s or later.

Where is the top active player? It’s Manchester United‘s Wayne Rooney, 38th overall, with 184 goals scored.
